Pub chain Wetherspoons is set to open its new Camden Street location on October 20. The new location will be a pub and 89 bedroom hotel, named Keavan’s Port.

The company have invested more than 21 million euro in developing the new pub and hotel, and have promised up to 200 full and part time jobs will be created on the premises.

This announcement comes after recent calls to boycott the Wetherspoons chain as many are still angry about the way they treated their staff during the COVID-19 pandemic. Shortly after it was announced pubs were to close in the UK, boss Tim Martin sent out a video message to staff telling them they may face delays getting paid and he understood if they wanted to take jobs at supermarkets such as Tesco.

Wetherspoons PR Eddie Gershon said they “cannot comment on that” but to note that all staff “have been paid from the start up to and including now”.

The new Camden Street pub will feature two bars, one located on the lower ground floor and the other at ground floor level within the gazed atrium. There will also be two enclosed courtyards. The name Keavan’s Port comes from Camden Street being previously known as St Kevin’s Port.

Wetherspoon chief executive John Hutson said: “ We are looking forward to opening our new pub and hotel in Dublin.

“It is the company’s biggest single investment on a site and will also house its largest hotel. The project has gone back a few months as building work was put on hold due to Covid-19, however, we are delighted that building work is once again underway. We believe the pub and hotel will be a great asset to Dublin and hopefully it will act as a catalyst for other businesses to invest in the city.”

Work on the location was briefly halted in March when construction sites closed but has now been resumed and the building will be ready for the opening in October.
